2014-08-04 | Kylie And Lulu Close The Commonwealth Games |
Kylie Minogue and Lulu were among the stars who performed at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, marking the end of 11 days of sporting action.
The event got under way at Glasgow's Hampden Park stadium with fireworks before Lulu sang her famous hit Shout.
The singer, who is from the city, told the 40,000-strong crowd: "Isn't it great to be here tonight everybody?
"Tonight is all about saying thank you so I think we need some very important people to come on down here to get this party started.
"Welcome the athletes from Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games."
The athletes emerged from almost 700 tents dotted throughout the stadium as the crowd cheered.
The competition, featuring 17 different sports, saw more than 140 Commonwealth and several world records broken.
England topped the medal table, followed by Australia, Canada and host nation Scotland.
Deacon Blue paid tribute to the behind-the-scenes workers who kept the city going for the duration of the Games.
The Glasgow band performed their anthem, Dignity, which tells the story of the dreams of a local council worker.
The thousands of volunteers who helped make the Games a reality were next to be thanked.
Local synth-pop trio Prides introduced the Games volunteers - known as Clyde-siders - as they performed their song Messiah.
About 100 volunteers featured in the ceremony, representing the 15,000 Clyde-siders who gave up their free time to keep the Games moving like clockwork.
Representatives of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo also performed in the stadium before the flag of the Commonwealth Games was later lowered.
The next Games will be held in 2018 in Australia's Gold Coast. One of the country's best-known figures Kylie Minogue played a seven-song set.
She performed hits including Spinning Around and The Locomotion - which got the crowd on their feet, including Prime Minister David Cameron, First Minister Alex Salmond and the Earl of Wessex.
Mr Salmond said: "The overwhelming impression of Glasgow and Scotland's Games is of a job extremely well done.
"We hope we have taken the baton on for the Commonwealth and present it to the Gold Coast in fine order."
Mr Cameron said: "We say thank you to the people of Glasgow, the organising committee, the city council, the troops the police, the athletes.

2004-04-28 | George Michael king of the airwaves |
George Michael is the most played artist on British radio.
The singer has received more airplay than Robbie Williams, Elton John and Madonna.
Songs such as Careless Whisper and Faith have earned him millions of plays on radio stations up and down the country and now he is being honoured by the Radio Academy for his achievement.
"I can't believe it. I've only made six albums in 22 years so I don't know how this happened. I'm the luckiest writer on earth," Michael said.
His hits with Wham!, including Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, I'm Your Man and Last Christmas, helped him top the chart of most played artists of the past 20 years.
Sir Elton was second in the list, followed by Williams.
Kylie Minogue was fourth and one of only two women to make the top 10 - the other is Madonna at number six. Bryan Adams is fifth thanks to his hit (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, which topped the charts for 16 weeks in 1991.
The chart was compiled by Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL), which collects royalties from radio stations on behalf of record companies, from the 600 national and local radio stations in the UK. Source: Ananova |

A battle between pop princesses has ended with Britney Spears sweeping to the top of the singles charts, leaving Kylie Minogue trailing.
Britney is back at the top of the chart for the first time in nearly four years after beating Kylie to the number one spot.

Britney last topped the chart in May 2000 with Oops!... I Did It Again.
Her victory was all the sweeter after Kylie, 35, took a swipe at the 22-year-old American's risque videos.
"I'm no prude. But I'm not going to those lengths," Kylie said. "I've always been on the right side of the line." Source: Ananova |

Police began a search for Kylie Minogue after people reported a woman who looked like her being abducted in London.
However it was soon discovered that documentary makers had faked the kidnap outside her flat in the south-west of the city.
The search for Kylie was called off when the makers phoned police to say the abduction was a hoax.
Kylie was not at her flat when the incident happened. Her spokesman said she was in the recording studio at the time, says theDaily Mirror.
Scotland Yard said they would be issuing strongly worded advice to documentary makers in the future.
They believed the team were from Channel 4. The channel has denied any involvement.
Kylie's spokesman added: "This is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do and I can't believe anyone would be that stupid."
